Brian: (Sitting on the couch, watching a poker game, eager to unwind from his day.)
Me: (Smiling while doing a brief spin.) Well, what do you think?
Brian: (Brief pause.) I'm thinking. . .Prince?
Me: Yes! I was thinking Stevie Nicks-ish for some reason, but Prince works too. Thanks!
Brian: (With a wry but amused smile.) Have fun tonight, Purple Rain.
This is a typical scene for me and my husband. I parade into the living room, excitedly showing him my latest outfit creation. Sometimes, his eyes light up right away and I can tell he loves it. Other times, particularly for my wackier choices, he's not as sure what to say. He always admires my moxy, though. Brian has learned that anything less than absolutely-necessary constructive criticism (e.g. "your slip is showing") is likely to be met with either: a.) an explanation of why my ensemble is actually very in style; b.) a hurt expression; or c.) something along the lines of, 'well I like it and that's all that matters!' I was so proud of my jacket and boots combo that Reaction C would have been my response to any negativity, but my wonderful Brian gave me nothing but love. I guess, this is what it feels like when doves cry? (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
The jacket's purple hue is loosely related to the Pantone Color of the Year, Marsala. My "top" is actually a dickie. Why that invention is no longer sold on a wide scale is beyond me-I get the ruffles without the bulk. The boots, aptly called "Dancing Queen" keep my legs warm in this flip-flopping St. Louis weather.
